According to a report from , Koln have reached an agreement with Southampton over a deal worth up to €10 million (£8m/$11m) that will see Downs head to the Championship. Although the 20-year-old forward is currently on international duty with the United States, the move should be finalised after the Gold Cup final against Mexico.

Koln initially intended to extend Downs’ contract, which runs until 2026, and reportedly made a strong renewal offer. However, the club could not match the financial terms put forward by Southampton. Downs scored 10 goals last season, helping Koln achieve promotion.
